Play On! " The After School Fitness Challenge
is coming to Warren, New Jersey !
"The problem of childhood obesity and inactivity has reached such an epidemic that if we don't change the way kids think about exercise their futures will be filled with a lifetime of avoidable illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. Organized sports don't meet the needs of all kids, Play On does." says Larry Wasserman, Co- Owner and Director of Play On.
Wasserman, a certified personal trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, has partnered with Todd Dattoli, also a nationally certified Personal Trainer and Youth Fitness Specialist to bring this program to Warren New Jersey's elementary schools as an after-school enrichment program. The program will be a combination of vigorous exercise aimed at challenging student's flexibility, endurance, and coordination.
What makes Play On unique is its "knowledge is power" component, which will teach the students about making healthy nutritional choices. "Helping children to embrace a healthy lifestyle at an early age is key to them becoming healthy adults." Dattoli says.
Students are encouraged to participate in three days-a-week for eight weeks of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and health/nutritional education per-week at 45-50 minutes per-session.
The vision for Play On is to empower students 4th through 8th grade to challenge themselves to “Get Moving” by making exercise "FUN", and learn to lead a healthier lifestyle by teaching them to make healthier food choices. By teaching and coaching healthier lifestyle choices through exercise and nutrition, the program has the chance to reduce the risks for lifestyle-related diseases that are affecting so many of our youth today.
